Sony and Honda to Deploy AI to Boost EV Self-Driving Capability
In a significant move to catch up with industry leader Tesla, Sony Group and Honda Motor have announced plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the self-driving capabilities of their electric vehicles (EVs). The collaboration between the two Japanese giants will see the introduction of AI-powered autonomous driving features in their upcoming luxury model, the Afeela, which is set to debut in Japan and the U.S. in 2026.
The joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility, aims to leverage advanced AI technology to improve the safety, efficiency, and overall driving experience of their EVs. The Afeela model, equipped with over 45 sensors and powered by Qualcomm's Digital Chassis platform, will offer Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities. This means the vehicle can handle most driving tasks, but the driver must remain alert and ready to take over if needed.
The Afeela EV is designed to be more than just a mode of transportation. It aims to provide a "moving entertainment space" with features like augmented reality (AR) driving assistance graphics, developed using Unreal Engine, and interfaces for movies, games, and infotainment. The sleek design, reminiscent of a spaceship, includes a panoramic sunroof and a media bar that interacts with both the driver and the environment.
Pre-orders for the Afeela model are expected to begin in the first half of 2025, with deliveries starting in spring 2026 in North America and later in Japan. This ambitious project represents a significant step forward in the integration of AI and automotive technology, promising to redefine the future of mobility.
